Snowshoeing Featured Article

Have You Tried Snowshoeing Yet?

Snowshoeing is something that people do for fun, but there is also a level of necessity to it. Snowshoes allow you to walk on very deep snow without sinking. The snowshoe itself is designed to support your weight. In fact, it distributes your weight and keeps you up. People travel through the woods and fields regularly using their snowshoes. Whether you have a farm and need to tend to your animals or you simply want to enjoy the woods in the dead of winter, snowshoes are a good idea.

People in warm climates or in areas that don’t get a lot of snow may not understand exactly why snowshoeing would be necessary. Well, after a blizzard and there are two feet of snow on the ground, if you don’t have snowshoes you won’t be able to navigate around your property easily. For example, you will need to go snowshoeing if you realize you left your shovel in a distant part of your property and you need it to shovel out your front walkway.

But, snowshoeing is also a sport. There are people who need to be outdoors every day. In the summer you can easily visit the woods regularly to run, walk, or hike. But in the summer this is not so easy. Ice and snow make hiking difficult, especially if there is a lot of snow on the ground or even if there is ice. Well, modern snowshoes are lightweight and durable. They not only have a design that keeps you above the snow, but they also have a claw for gripping at ice. Granted, if the ice is really slippery and does not have snow on it, this is not the best way to travel on ice. You’d need crampons for that. But snowshoeing does have its advantages.

Snowshoeing is also great exercise. Your body burns more calories in the winter when you exercise outside. That is because your body expends extra energy to stay warm. If you are snowshoeing on a really cold day, remember to carry with you a lot of high calorie snacks such as dried fruit and nuts to munch on over the course of the day. And, bring enough supplies just in case. Snowshoeing in the winter can be dangerous and you don’t know if you will end up in a situation where you are stranded.
